Balboa Island is located in the middle of the Newport Bay, and is a lovely place to call home.

It is actually made up of 3 artificial islands – Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island and Collins Island. Balboa Island became part of the City of  Newport Beach in 1916.

The Island is connected to the mainland by a two lane bridge off of Jamboree on the northeast of the island which can be crowded during the summer though not as bad as the Ferry. On the opposite side of Balboa Island, the Balboa Ferry allows access to the Island.  The ferry operates three private ferries to and from the island, 7 days a week, providing a lovely trip on the Newport Bay for a nominal fee. The ferry carries pedestrians, bikes and cars throughout the year. Ferry passengers are taken from Balboa Island to the Balboa Fun Zone which is an area of Newport Beach featuring arcades, restaurants, shops, a ferris wheel, boat rentals, shopping, restaurants and other attractions.

Newport Harbor, which surrounds Balboa Island is one of the largest pleasure yachting harbors in the world.

There is plenty of shopping in small boutiques, art galleries and other retail stores on the Island.  There are also several different and wonderful restaurants.  There is even a Starbucks.  My favorite though are the Balboa Bars which are chocolate covered ice cream rolled in a variety of candies or nuts.

Between 1908 and 1909, waterfront lots on Balboa Island were selling between $350 and $750, with rumors that were sold for as little as $25. A far cry from today when values are in the millions.
